Mumbai: The Department of Posts (DoP), Ministry of Communications, Government of India, has entered into a strategic partnership with the Indian Institute of Packaging (IIP) to drive sustainable packaging solutions across India Post’s operations.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed in Mumbai to strengthen eco-friendly practices, enhance efficiency, and align postal services with global logistics benchmarks.
The MoU was signed by Dr Sudhir Jakhere, IPoS, Assistant Postmaster General (Business Development & Marketing), Maharashtra Circle, Department of Posts, and Dr Babu Rao Guduri, Additional Director, Indian Institute of Packaging, Mumbai.
Manoj Kumar, Director Postal Services (Mails & Business Development), Maharashtra Circle, was also present at the signing ceremony.

Focus on Sustainable Packaging Solutions
The collaboration emphasizes the development and implementation of Sustainable Packaging Solutions for parcel services. Under the agreement, IIP will deliver end-to-end packaging strategies, including:
- Designing sustainable alternatives to conventional materials such as corrugated boxes and cloth wraps.
- Developing airworthy packaging for liquids and fragile items.
- Creating eco-friendly, durable, lightweight, shockproof, and customizable packaging solutions scalable across India Post’s network.
- Benchmarking Department of Posts’ practices with global packaging and logistics industry standards.
- Preparing a comprehensive pricing approach paper comparing sustainable packaging costs with traditional options and detailing technical specifications for size, shape, and design.
- Outlining quality control measures and scalability strategies for nationwide deployment.
- Producing video-based training modules to educate postal staff on sustainable packaging practices.

Strengthening India Post’s Green Initiatives
Leveraging IIP’s 58 years of expertise in packaging technology and the Department of Posts’ vast network of more than 1.65 lakh post offices, the partnership establishes a strong framework for innovation in Sustainable Packaging Solutions.
The collaboration supports the Government of India’s broader vision of environmental sustainability, while improving the safety, security, and reliability of postal services nationwide.
